I'm not sure I entirely understand your question but this is what I think:

Protectively = adverb (ends with -ly and describes verbs)

Protective = adjective (describes nouns)

Protect = verb (is a doing word)

Protection = noun (the name of something?)

The writer developed the main event in the introduction of the passage and then added supporting sentences about the consequences of that main event.
