Motivational obstacle- Rory wants to switch from a surgeon to a  pediatrician so he can be happy working with  children . This is a motivational obstacle because Rory is not happy with his current career. He doesn't derive joy working as a surgeon. Therefore, he wants to switch to another career(paediatrics) where he will be  motivated to work because of his passion for children.

Economic obstacle - Cort is struggling to get a job in construction  because many businesses have closed down  due to no work. This is an economic obstacle because many businesses are shut doen due to the poor economy  and recession. Also, his struggle to get a job also points to the fact that there is economic instability that is affecting the rate of employment.

The diction of Steinbeck here in apparently describing the dustbowl conditions of the Dirty Thirties is speaking of "tenant men" or presumably men who were tenant farmers perhaps who were allowed to live on the land in return for working it and that they "scuffed"  their way home indicates that the dust was so thick they had to scuff but also perhaps that since they could barely make a living under the poor agricultural conditions they did not walk confidently but scuffed.
