The neuron has three basic parts that can be likened to your arm. Your fingers represent the dendrites; the palm of your hand represents the cell body or soma; and your forearm represents the axon.

A neuron or nerve cell, is the functional unit of the nervous system. It is specialized to process signals and transmits information them throughout the body, and communicate between the brain and rest of the body.  

The unique structure, resembling that of our hands, helps the neuron to receive and send signals to make neuronal communications  

Just like how our hands are with fingers stretched out, flat palm and a long arm; the neuron also have branched dendrites which stretch out, flat cell body or the soma, and the long slender axon.

Dendrites are branch like structures which extend out from the cell body. They receive the signal and passes into the cell body to travel down the cell

Cell body consists of cellular components like nucleus, cytoplasm, Golgi apparatus etc

Axon is a long slender cylindrical tube that passes the signals from the cell body to the tail region of the neuron.  

The dendrites of one neuron is connected to the axon of another neuron through synapses through which the signals pass from each another neuron.
