Equiano worked on several ships, and was able to travel to many different countries. Eventually, he was purchased by a man in Philadelphia. He was able to save enough money to purchase his freedom in 1766. Equiano settled in Europe and continued to travel extensively. Eventually he wrote his autobiography and published it in two volumes in 1789.
