Read this excerpt from chapter 1 of The Scarlet Letter using comprehension strategies. But, on one side of the portal, and roote
Mila [183]

Answer:

The rosebush is nature’s offering to those who must enter or leave the prison.

Explanation:

Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" revolves around the adultery conviction of Hester Prynne and the 'punishment' she must endure for the crime. This Puritan society's expectation of making a 'perfect' society where a sin like adultery is a major crime one can commit, and the eventual punishment that she must endure, bearing the "scarlet letter A" as a sign of her sin and punishment for all to see.

In the given excerpt from the very first chapter of the book, the speaker/ narrator describes the jail/prison entrance where there grew a while rose-bush. It offered its <em>"fragrance and fragile beauty to the prisoner as he went in, and to the condemned criminal as he came forth to his doom .... [as a] token that the deep heart of Nature could pity and be kind to him." </em>This <u>rosebush is a symbol of nature's offering to everyone who enters or leaves the prison. </u>

Which statement best describes an effective counterclaim to the claim in this passage? Because Dred Scott's parents were born ou
lara [203]

Answer:

Because Dred Scott and his family were born in the United States, they are citizens with all the rights granted by the Constitution.

Explanation:

According to a different source, this is the passage that the question refers to:

<em>"It will be observed, that the plea applies to that class of persons only whose ancestors were negroes of the African race, and imported into this country, and sold and held as slaves. The only matter in issue before the court, therefore, is, whether the descendants of such slaves, when they shall be emancipated, or who are born of parents who had become free before their birth, are citizens of a State, in the sense in which the word "citizen” is used in the Constitution of the United States. . . . . . . The question before us is, whether the class of persons described in the plea in abatement compose a portion of this people, and are constituent members of this sovereignty? We think they are not, and that they are not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word "citizens" in the Constitution, and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which that instrument provides for and secures to citizens of the United States."</em>

In this passage, the opinion of the author is that Dred Scott cannot be considered an American citizen because he is the descendant of slaves. The author argues that slaves were not considered as "citizens" when the Constitution was written, and therefore, their children cannot be citizens either. However, a counterclaim to this statement would be the argument that Dred Scott and his family should be considered citizens because they were born in the United States, and therefore, deserve all the rights that citizenship grants them.

How does rip van winkle’s story best parallel to the story of america’s independence
Amanda [17]

Answer and Explanation:

The short story "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving is an allegory. That means its characters and events have a deeper meaning. In this particular case, the story concerns the independence of America.

<u>Rip's wife is a representation of England in the story. She is constantly nagging her husband, always demanding more from him. She sees Rip as lazy and worthless. This is to show how England viewed America in a bad light, how the British perceived Americans as lazy drunkards who did not know better.</u>

<u>Rip, of course, is the representation of America. He is loved by the other villagers, and kids follow him around, hoping he will tell them a story. Women see in him a helpful and strong man who is willing to do chores that their own husbands won't do. It is true, however, that he does not enjoy working on his own farm. He'd rather go hunting, fishing, or simply stay idle all day at the village with other lazy men at the inn's door.</u>

When exploring the Catskills with his dog, Winkle ends up falling asleep. His slumber lasts for 20 years. <u>When he finally wakes up, he finds not only a free country but a free self - his wife has died. Rip's independence is as confusing as America's independence. Rip does not know what to do, how to act, what to pursue. Just like for the newly independent America, things seem good but overwhelming. In the end, Winkle goes back to being his old, idle self.</u>
