Poison dart frogs live in the rainforest. They produce a poison by eating toxic fire ants. The only known predator is a snake, L

Answer:

A. clear cutting the rainforest

Explanation:

In ecology, density independent factors are defined as the factors that influences birth or death rates of a population, regardless of the population density.

Density independent factors generally include physical factors of environment and are unrelated to the size of the population.

Density-independent regulator of population growth of poison dart frogs in the rainforest will be affected by clear cutting the rainforest because if the animal will loss its habitat and the required condition to live which is rainforest, it will unable to survive which will lead to increase in death rates of poison dart frogs.

Hence, clear cutting of raiforest leads to loss of habitat as well as its food resources, the correct answer is A.

Sometimes, when Mendel crossed two pea plants with each other, he obtained a phenotypic ratio of 3:1 purple-flowered pea plants
DochEvi [55]

Answer:

<em>Heterozygous purple-flowered parents</em>

Explanation:

<em>A cross involving two heterozygous parents for a dominant trait always segregates in 3:1 phenotypic ratio according to Mendel's law of segregation.</em>

In this case, if purple flower colour is dominant over white flower colour and the trait is represent by P, the heterozygous purple-flowered pea plants will be Pp. If two heterozygous individuals are crossed,

Pp   x   Pp    = PP, Pp, Pp, pp

Since P is a dominant allele, the phenotypic ratio will be 3 purple to 1 white.

<em>Hence, the results are consistent with heterozygous purple-flowered parents.</em>

The general function of an enzyme in the body is to ________. The general function of an enzyme in the body is to ________. elim
bixtya [17]

Answer:

catalyze chemical reactions

Explanation:

An enzyme is a proteinous substance that acts as biological catalysts and increases the rate of biochemical reactions in the body. Enzymes are specific in nature which is as a result of the structure/shape of its building block (amino acid).

Enzymes speedens the rate of a chemical reaction in living systems, which would normally not occur or occur at a much slower rate, without the presence of an enzyme. Enzymes acts on the reactants called Substrates by binding to them to form products but they are not used up in the reaction. Hence, enzymes are not reactants.

Describe how the lac operon functions and explain how it permits E. coli to produce the enzymes needed to break down lactose whe
morpeh [17]

Answer and Explanation:

Bacteria like E.coli have devised mechanisms of survival even when conditions are harsh. This is through the production of such enzymes as B-galactosidase that enable them break down substrates like lactose in their metabolism.

For E.coli, mechanism that controls how enzyme activity is turned <em>on or off </em> target the genes that code for the enzymes. This system is termed as lac operon, and the enzymes that are coded for by genes which are sometimes active or inactive and depending on substrate availability are referred to as inducible enzymes.

So how does the lac operon work?

<em>Lac operon </em>works to regulate lactose metabolism in <em>E.coli. </em>An operon refers to a collection of one or more structural genes that direct synthesis of a particular enzyme.

So when lactose is present in a growth media, it acts as an Inducer  hence it binds to lac oppressor (normally blocks operator). This reppressor then cannot block the operator, and RNA polymerase enzyme can proceed and bind the promoter hence transcription of the <em>Z, Y and A genes </em>that form the mRNA.

The mRNA in association with ribosomes initiate the synthesis of the following enzymes for lactose metabolism;

Permease, Y gene - that normally directs the entry of lactose into the cells

B-galactosidase, Z gene - that aim to break down lactose to simple units

Transacetylase, A gene - for complete lactose breakdown.

So after these events in <em>E.coli</em> cell, the lactose that was once available has been broken down and none is left to bind to repressor. What happens thereafter is the binding of this active repressor to the operator and thus system is shut down or more correctly, turned off.
