Both muscle mass, fat and the proportion between them are of utmost importance to your body. Generally speaking, it is more important to have more muscle mass than to taste in your body, but the more muscle mass you have the greater your weight. Thus we can say that the weight itself is not important, but the ratio between the muscle mass and the amount of fat that your body has.

For example, if you have started your weight training workouts but your weight on the scale has not dropped, you should note whether you are consuming more calories than you are spending, or you may be gaining muscle mass, and thereby trading fat mass for muscle mass. Increased muscle mass causes an increase in metabolism, and thus a loss of body fat.
