In the Greek culture portrayed in the Iliad, a warrior is supposed to be courageous, strong, and fearless in the face of adversity or war.

It is unheard of for a Greek warrior to refuse to fight a battle because he was scared for his life. Cowards were frowned upon and ridiculed.

There is no greater honor accorded to a man who went to fight for the honor of his household or country, even if he ends up dead.

Therefore, the worst fate for a warrior in the culture represented in the Iliad is shame (aidos)
