Answer: One of the ways the path of a nitrogen atom begins is as a part of an ammonium ion. A plant takes up the ion and uses it to make an organic molecule through assimilation. The organic molecule falls back to the ground as part of a leaf. The leaf is decomposed by bacteria, and it is converted back to ammonium by ammonification. The ammonium ion is then converted to nitrite by nitrifying bacteria through nitrification.
