Explanation:
The first clue is telling us about his house. He is saying that his house was an eyesore which means that it was bad looking for him and it was small. After that, he is saying that the house was near the houses of the millionaire's which was the comforting circumstance for him. In this first sentence with two clues, we can see that he is the character with little money and that he wants to be surrounded by rich people.
Then, he is talking about white palaces(rich people's houses) and fashionable East Egg which was the place of wealthy people. The history of the summer is telling us that everything began that summer when he drove over there.
The two parts of this excerpt from W. W. Jacobs's "The Monkey's Paw" show that show the White family doesn't believe in the talisman's power are:
"Sounds like the 'Arabian Nights,'" said Mrs. White, as she rose and began to set the supper.
The 'Arabian Nights' were stories made up by the narrator Scheherazade and told to the King over 1001 nights so that he would not kill her as he had done with so many other women in the past. In this way, it signifies that Mrs. White believes this story to be a made-up tale.

"Don't you think you might wish for four pairs of hands for me." Her husband drew the talisman from his pocket, and all three burst into laughter
Mr. White is jokingly asking to be given four pairs of hands, something that isn't sensible or realistic, because he does not believe in the power of the talisman to grant wishes. In the end the three burst in laughter as they do not take the talisman, or the story of it's power, seriously.
In this sentence the word "but" is a coordinating word.
There are seven coordinated conjuctions which are and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet. Coordinating conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses. They connect sweeping ideas together, creating cohesive, comprehensive ideas. In the case of BUT, it shows contract between the first idea and the second one. In this case the contradictions lies in the fact that the girl wanted to sit in a place where there were no more available sears.
