This is because during the time of high amounts of pollution industrial melanism takes place and the moth's pigmentation becomes a darker tone. This is so that the moths are able to blend in better with its surroundings and survive. Pollution causes sulphur dioxide gas and dark soot deposits which have a greyish dark tone, thats why moths pigmentation turns darker. With pollution reduced moths need a lighter colored pigment to blend into lighter colored objects such as trees and leaves.
