Answer:

Henry David Thoreau suggests that one should be willing to go to great lengths for a belief.

Explanation:

Henry David Thoreau in his essay "Civil Disobedience" propagates the idea of the citizens to not allow the government to overrule their personal rights. Obeying each and every rule that the government makes will only lead to the degradation of one's civil rights. He himself had refused to pay the poll tax that was levied on every single person, for which he was eventually imprisoned to be later released after a relative paid the tax on his behalf. He suggests and also did it in deed, his idea that one should be ready and willing to do anything and everything for what he truly believed in.

1. A. strength

The simile that likens his shoulders to a full sail shows the force that must be exerted to plough the field. A "globed" sail would be rounded because of the powerful winds blowing against it. Just as the wind's, resistance is transformed into something useful by moving the boat forwards; his father's exertion transforms the land into fields that grow crops of food. While ploughing the land in this way would certainly require knowledge and skill, the simile does not refer to these qualities.

2. D. "Mapping the furrow exactly"

Reference to the father's expertise is indicated by his "mapping the furrow" and doing so "exactly."

What effect does Stephen Crane achieve by repeating the phrase "the sacred cheese" in the short story "The Open Boat"?
Karolina [17]

Answer:

 1. A.) The crew's determination to realize their slight chance of reaching land.
 2. C.) compares the men to mice who must struggle to survive but have their efforts go in vain.

Explanation:

"The Open Boat" is normal for Crane's naturalistic style. Naturalism in writing is a point of view that frequently underscores the material, the physical condition as a determinant in human conduct.

In "The Open Boat," one of the best short stories in the language, Crane depends on tone and symbolism to depict the cold blooded detachment of nature. The popular opening line, “None of them knew the color of the sky,” sets up a quick dreariness, a world drained of the emotional value of color. The sea is described as gray and the only green, suggestive of hope, is that of the land that the men cannot reach.
