One might use elaboration to further explain a concept or a certain situation to another person or group of people. For example, I used elaboration or explained the contents of my bedroom in deeper detail. One item in particular is a Japanese Vase that is overall white, but has beautifully painted blue birds on it, clutching cherry blossoms in their feet with Japanese writing on the sides. In this way, I am elaborating or further explaining the content of the vase and not simply saying; "a white Japanese vase"

I might use elaboration when explaining my favorite character in a television show. For example, I was talking with one of my friends when she asked who my favorite character was in the show The Office. I told her that he had shaggy brown hair in the beginning of the show; he always wears a white shirt with slacks, he's always playing pranks on a co-worker, and he is about 6ft tall. My friend immediately guessed it was Jim. If I had just said "it's a tall brown-haired guy," she wouldn't have got it as easily.
