Which phrase or sentence in this excerpt from Kurt Vonnegut's "Report on the Barnhouse Effect" demonstrates the use of irony?
ycow [4]
<span>General Barker bustled about the house like a woman preparing Thanksgiving dinner for twenty.

This is the best example of irony. The excerpt describes General Barker, who occupies a traditionally very masculine profession, preparing for the demonstration of the most destructive weapon in the history of mankind as if he were a woman bustling about the house preparing Thanksgiving dinner. This juxtaposition creates a sense of irony. </span>

Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris."

Which of the following choices best describes the syntax in this quotation?
vampirchik [111]

In this case, the main sentence has an embedded clause at the end:

"<em>I think </em><em>that ’twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon</em><em>.</em>" (embedded clause in bold.)

This embedded sentence is <u>complex</u> as it has one independent clause ("<em>...the white men will be in a fix pretty soon.</em>") and a dependent clause ("<em>...that 'twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North...</em>")

The main sentence presents a simple syntactic pattern: S.V.O. (Subject-Verb-Object), as it contains a mono-transitive verb ("<em>think</em>") which requires a direct object following it ("<em>that...</em>"). The subject of the sentence is the personal pronoun "<em>I</em>". This S.V.O. pattern is present in sentences much simpler, such as "<em>I think this</em>" or "<em>I like that.</em>"

In My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass, which adjective best characterizes the Aulds’ home during his early childhoo
amm1812

The question above is incomplete, the options attached to the question are given below:

A. Contended

B. Demanding

C. Harsh

D. Hectic

ANSWER

The correct option is A.

Douglass was a slave, who had experienced the harsh reality of been a slave. He has been moved around a lot, from one master to another master; and one of the masters he served were Mr and Mrs Auld. His condition as a slave improved a little bit when he first got to the home of the Auld's. Mrs Auld has never had a slave before so she was excited to have one and did not really know how slaves were treated by other white people. So she treated Douglass not as a slave but as a human being and even went to the extent of teaching him how to read and write. But all that stopped, when Mr Auld find out that his wife has been teaching Douglass how to read and write.
