Rheumatic fever may occur following GABHS pharyngitis in children. The most serious complication is rheumatic heart disease ( RHD ). Acute rheumatic fever  ( ARF ) is infection that follows 2-3 weeks after group A streptococcal pharyngitis. Children with serious RHD will need to visit cardiologist for the rest of their lives.
