The answer is b.solemn.  For him it was about the process and the effort of getting the prize.  That was what made it desirable in the first place.  When he attained it, it was a different matter.  He no longer felt as excited in keeping it as he did when he was pursuing it.  It was all about the thrill of the hunt for him.
