Compare Siegfried Sassoon’s works to Valery’s essay. How are their messages similar? How do the authors persuade their audiences
Dmitry [639]
Siegfried Sasson illustrates the dramatic transformation most soldiers went through after experiencing World War 1. Englishmen like Sasson initially thought themselves as involved in a heroic effort to defend liberalism and the British a hellish and pointless nightmare. Intellectuals like Paul Valery were also disillusioned by the war, and many feared that the West and its liberal values would not long survive. In the essay below, he makes allusion to the scene in which Hamlet ponders mortality while studying the skull that is all that remains of a man he had known in life.

VIME REMAINING
zaharov [31]

Answer:

When I was four years old, my dad and I planted a tree in our front yard.

Until I turned 18 years old, Dad and I measured it  every year on my birthday.

Explanation:

In the first example, the verb to plant is used in the Past Simple Tense. It is because the action, that the girl is talking about, has happened in the past, and there is a time order when I was four years old. This is a finished action with a finish time word.

In the second example, the verb to measure is used in the Past Simple Tense. It is because the action is repeating in the past and there is an expression every year.  This tense is used for that this repeated action is now completed and took a place in a specific time in the past.

Diano4ka-milaya [45]

Answer:

c. In his left hand he held a sack, and his right hand held the arm of a boy in an iron grip.

Explanation:

Based on the excerpt from the story of Iqbal, we can easily know that the master was a cruel man just by the way he held the young boy's arm. The very word "an iron grip" gives a strong indication of someone holding onto something that wouldn't be let go easily. This sentence

In his left hand he held a sack, and his right hand held the arm of a boy in an iron grip

gives the character of Hussain, the master as someone who is cruel and representation of someone who was to be obeyed by the children.
