Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the U.S, was a general and a wealthy slaveholder. His buddies approved rise in tariffs, which hurt South Carolina’s business of exporting cotton overseas. The South Carolina legislature had the federal tariff laws nullified, in clear defiance of the Federal Government. Jackson readied the U.S Navy ships and sent them to Charleston harbor, and there threatened to hang anyone supporting nullification. If the affair went violent, other states would take notice and start making steps to gain capability in safeguarding their own interests by acquiring weapons and manpower out of Federal control.
