If you are referring to the poem My Last Duchess by Robert Browning, then the dramatic monologue is important in order for the audience to fully understand the character of the Duke. If carefully analyzed, you can see that the monologue is less about the duchess and more about his arrogance and controlling nature and that he ultimately cares more about himself.

A dramatic monologue is often used by poets to lead a character in revealing something personal. The fact that the Duke is a cruel and harsh person is revealed through his own words.

In the course of his monologue, the Duke exposes his own crime of killing his wife.

The Duke is arrogant and indulges in self-praise at every opportunity; his self-aggrandizing words reveal his pride and arrogance.

<span>G.K. Chesterton believes that Saint Thomas Aquinas viewed man as a whole rather than as a beast like the anthropologists. This is probably because he is more attuned with the moral within which says that man is a reflection of god.
