The answer is Anthony Down’s median voter theorem. Candidates revise their message to attract moderate voters is an example of Anthony Down’s median voter theorem.

EXPLANATION

The median voter theorem is a theory that states “a majority rule voting system will select the outcome most preferred by the median voter. The median voter theorem stands by two main assumptions. The first assumption is that the voters can place alternatives along the one-dimensional political spectrum. It seems plausible for the voters to do this since they can place the political candidates on the left-to-right continuum. The hard part is it’s not the case because each party is going to have its policy responding to different issues.

The second assumption is that the voters have one alternative that they favor more than the other one, the voters’ preferences can be seen as single-peaked. This theorem also assumes that the voters will always vote. Event hough the political candidates do not meet their expectation, they will still vote regardless. The median voter theorem will do the best in a majoritarian election system.

This theorem is Anthony Down’s since Down has done research in representative democracy and found out about the median voter theorem. The median voter theorem was also formalized by Duncan Black in Black’s work of majority voting.
