There are many different kinds of tones, like: positive, negative, objective, sad, angry, etc. In the given excerpt from "The Dark Game" we can see an example of an admiring tone, because the speaker is highliting the "masterful job" that Wyke did. If the word "masterful" were changed to "good" the tone of the sentence would be more neutral, because it would be less influenced by the speaker's opinion.
