Phospholipids are a class of lipids that contain a phosphorus atom. They are structural components in cell membranes. They have an amphiphilic ( having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic) characteristic and thus they can form a lipid bilayer. Their structure consists of two hydrophobic fatty acid "tails" and a hydrophilic "head" consisting of a phosphate group.
