In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, we can observe characters acting on different types of motivation.

1 - What motivates Tybalt to try to confront Romeo at the Capulets' party?

As soon as Tybalt learns of Romeo's presence in the party, he is motivated to fighting him due to their families' rivalry against each other. While Tybalt is a Capulet, Romeo is a Montague which means that there is a great animosity between them and Romeo shouldn't have gone to that party in the first place as it was considered as intrusion.

2 - What motivates Romeo to sneak into Juliet's courtyard?

From the beginning of the play, we learn that Romeo is of the obsessive kind as he talks nonstop about his beloved Rosaline. However, he seems to forget all about that the very second he meets Juliet and his obsessive heart finds a new object of affection. When he met her, he didn't really know who she really was. However, after he learned of Juliet's last name, he became even more obsessed with her by her sudden impossibility. In simpler terms, he wanted her more because he knew he couldn't have her.

3- What motivates Friar Laurence to agree to marry Romeo and Juliet?

As the Friar becomes a mentor for both Romeo and Juliet, his affection for them and understanding for their affair grows as he coaches them on how to act properly. He agrees to marry them because he believes that their union will settle the war between the Montagues and the Capulets.

How does the knowledge of William Dean Howells’s background enhance your understanding of the story "Editha"?
sweet-ann [11.9K]
Understanding the life of Willam Dean Howells will give a new light to what Editha is truly about.
Howells was already involved with the country's social issues more so come 1887 when the Haymarket radicals were executed. It is through Editha that he showed his great dislike for Spanish-American war as he thought of it as imperialistic.
The need for America to gain power and prove it self-superior to other countries during the said war, which leads to the loss of many lives. This is similar to Editha's views on the correctness and necessity of war, to which because of his love for Editha, her fiance George, loses his life as well.
