Read the following excerpt from Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave: I suffered

much from hunger, but much more from cold. In hottest summer, and coldest winter, I was kept almost naked—no shoes, no stockings, no jacket, no trousers, nothing on but a coarse tow linen shirt, reaching only to my knees. I had no bed. Which of the following statements best explains how Douglass uses objectivity in this passage to convey his perspective? A. He avoids bias by specifying the seasons without actually mentioning the temperature. B. He uses pathos by referring to his hunger, which appeals to the reader's emotions. C. He simply lists the things that the author did not have, thus avoiding sentimentality. D. He uses formal word choices, such as "suffered much," to establish his credibility

The correct answer is C. He simply lists the things that the author did not have, thus avoiding sentimentality. Douglass refuses to emotionally manipulate his public unlike Harriet Beecher Stowe did with her Uncle tom's Cabin. Objectivity refuses emotion (pathos) and appeals more to reasonable logic and common sense which in turn may ellicit an emotional response that is grounded on onjective findings. Here he simply enumerates the lack of clothing and bed that proved especially painful during the cold of Winter. By doing this he makes his audience think how they would react if they were subjected to the same destitution.

Read the sentence.
NNADVOKAT [17]

The correct answer is A. The squirrel, who ran in circles around the circumference of the tree, chattered angrily at the curious cat.

Explanation:

This sentence is a complex one, which means it is composed by an independent clause, which is a sentence that express a complete idea and a dependent clause, which is a type of sentence that provides extra information linked to a independent clause and depends on it to be complete, as dependent clauses are just extra information and can be omitted they are always marked by commas (,) or similar punctuation marks. In this case, the main sentence is "The squirrel chattered angrily at the curious cat" as it expresses the main idea, on the other hand "who ran in circles around the circumference of the three" is just extra information (dependent clause) and thus should be between commas. Thus, A is the correct revision as this sentence contains a dependent clause that according to grammar should be between commas.
