PRESIDENT CARTER: We've brought down inflation. Earlier this year, the first quarter, we did have a very severe inflation pressu

re, brought about by the OPEC price increase. It averaged about 18 percent the first quarter of this year. The second quarter, we had dropped it down to about 13 percent. The most recent figures, the last 3 months, or the third quarter of this year, the inflation rate is 7 percent – still too high, but it illustrates very vividly that in addition to providing an enormous number of jobs – 9 million new jobs in the last 3 1/2 years – that the inflationary threat is still urgent on us . . . . So, our proposals are very sound and very carefully considered to stimulate jobs, to improve the industrial complex of this country, to create tools for American workers, and at the same time would be anti-inflationary in nature. So, to add 9 million new jobs, to control inflation, and to plan for the future with the energy policy now intact as a foundation is our plan for the years ahead. Which claim does President Carter make in this excerpt from the debate? The only way to lower inflation is to create a new energy policy. His new economic policy will help fix the OPEC price increase. Rising oil prices are not to blame for the increase in inflation. His polices have already reduced inflation by more than 10 percent.

Option 4: His polices have already reduced inflation by more than 10 percent.

The President Carter's statement of having reduced inflation by more than 10 percent function as a claim because it is used as a primary point to support and prove the effectiveness of his policies and the benefit that it represents when improving American economy so it can be accepted by the public.

Answer:

MR. ELLIS: Can you tell us what additional policies you would pursue in a second administration in order to try to bring down that inflation rate?

PRESIDENT CARTER: The new economic revitalization program that we have in mind, which will be implemented next year, would result in tax credits which would let business invest in new tools and new factories to create even more new jobs – about a million in the next 2 years. And we also have planned a youth employment program which would encompass 600,000 jobs for young people. This has already passed the House; now has an excellent prospect to pass the Senate.

Which statement best describes Carter’s response to the moderator’s question? (answer for edg)

Carter fails to provide evidence for how his new policies will decrease inflation.

Carter indicates how his proposed policies would bring down inflation rates.

Carter explains why inflation is rising, but does not explain how he would address it.

Carter acknowledges that his policies might not correct the issue of high inflation.

Is Madison's opinion of the role of self-interest in the conduct of one's life realistic? Why or why not?
Lera25 [3.4K]
Answer: Madison's major idea on this, expressed in such places as the Federalist Papers was that self-interest could be used to ensure liberty and justice. He argued that people were going to act in their own interests. What was needed was a government that was set up to make sure that those "selfish" actions actually helped.
