Which detail does Orwell include to support the theme that a lack of education can make a person easier to oppress? “The pigs ha

d sent out a large bottle of pink medicine which they had found in the medicine chest in the bathroom, and Clover administered it to Boxer twice a day after meals.” “If he made a good recovery, he might expect to live another three years, and he looked forward to the peaceful days that he would spend in the corner of the big pasture.” “It would be the first time that he had had leisure to study and improve his mind.” “He intended, he said, to devote the rest of his life to learning the remaining twenty-two letters of the alphabet.”

The answer is D: "He intended, he said, to devote the rest of his life to learning the remaining twenty-two letters of the alphabet".

This excerpt has been taken from "Animal Farm", written by George Orwell in 1945. "Animal Farm" tells the story of a group of farm animals which rebel against their farmer and start controlling the farm by themselves. According to many, this novel is an allegory of the Russian Revolution and many of the themes presented here reflect our own society. One of these themes is the lack of education which contributes to the vulnerability and oppression of people. Important figures or politicians take advantage of people's ignorance in order to win popularity and have power. One clear example is Boxer, one of the horses in the farm. Although Boxer is a very loyal comrade, he is not very smart and he has been controlled from the very beginning by the selfish pigs. Boxer can not even get past letter 'D' from the alphabet, so, in order to support this idea of lack of education, Orwell includes this passage where Boxer is determined to learn the rest of the remaining letters of the alphabet to be smarter.

In what way does Mirikitani’s “Attack the Water” compare to Muriel Ruckeyser’s “Poem”?
Amanda [17]
Mirikitani's "Attack the Water" relates to Rukeyser's "Poem" because they both focus on what civilians experience during wartime. "Attack the Water" describes the struggle of Vietnamese people living during (and after) the Vietnam War, and of Japanese-Americans in the era of Japanese Labor camps. "Poem" reflects on the struggle of people living during both of the World Wars, trying to get by and to get through such a tragic time. Both of these poems show that even when people are not involved directly in a war, war can still have an immense impact on their lives.
