Which of the following excerpts from part one of Trifles suggests that Mrs. Hale believes Mrs. Wright may have had a motive for

killing her husband? MRS. HALE. I’d hate to have men coming into my kitchen, snooping around and criticizing. MRS. HALE. She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls singing in the choir. MRS. HALE. Well, I guess John Wright didn’t wake when they was slipping that rope under his neck. MRS. HALE. That’s just what Mr. Hale said. There was a gun in the house. He says that’s what he can’t understand.

Answer:

The correct answer to the question: Which of the following excerpts from part one of "Trifles" suggest that Mrs. Hale believes Mrs. Wright may have had a motive for killing her husband, would be, MRS. HALE: She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls, singing in the choir.

Explanation:

"Trifles", a play that was written by Susan Glaspell, and which was first presented in 1916, narrates the story of the investigation of the murder of John Wright, and the process that takes place as his wife, Mrs. Wright is suspected of having committed the act. During the scene where the County Attorney, the Sheriff, Mr. Hale and the two latters´ wives come into the Wright home, the two women: Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, are left in the kitchen. As they observe the scene before them, the two of them start to notice some things that seem strange to them, especially given what they know about the role of a wife. But there is a specific moment when Mrs. Hale, accompanying Mrs. Peters into the front room closet, tells the latter, after she remarks on the coldness of the room, that Mrs. Wright changed a lot after her marriage to Mr. Wright, that she used to be much happier and involved in activities in town, while now, after her marriage, she has become isolated and seems sadenned all the time. This remark from Mrs. Hale points to the fact that the woman is already observing the evidence and gathering conclusions from what she can see around her, and from what she knows about Mrs. Wright.

Answer:

I would say that the excerpt from part one of <em>Trifles</em> that suggest that Mrs. Hale believes Mrs. Wright may have had a motive for killing her husband is <u>the second one</u>: <em>"MRS. HALE. She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls singing in the choir."</em>

Explanation:

In these lines, Mrs. Hales suggests that Mrs. Wright might have had something to do with the murderer <u>by pointing out how the wife had changed before and after the marriage with Mr. Wright.</u> She somehow thinks that it is accurate to bring <u>that fact</u> into the present because <u>she obviously thinks the two facts are related.</u> She is giving importance, during that particular investigation moment, to the fact that Mrs. Wright used to be a happy person who had an active social life, she is kind of suggesting something, she is not just giving a casual opinion, and that is why I chose the second option.
