The correct answer is that Daniel is using a counterquestioning technique in order to challenge what his classmate, Anna, has answered to a question most likely possed by the professor.

Explanation:

This can be surmised from the way that Daniel uses words, and phrases his ideas, that allow a reader to know that he has been challenging, almost sarcastically, what his classmate Anna has just said. Anna answers that the character is afraid of the truth and we can connect the ideas of the probable question given by the professor by the counterquestioning, or rather, counteranswering, given by Daniel. When he says: "Wait," you already know that he is questioning what has been said before, and will challenge the ideas. Then, instead of answering directly, he basically asks a question himself, probably asking his classmate to support her answer by his giving her another piece of information that she must also clarify, in order to support her previous answer.
