Answer: Imperfect Tense (Preterite)

Explanation:

The Imperfect Tense (Preterite) is one of the two forms of simple past in Spanish, and it is used to:

- talk about past habitual actions (adding used to in its different forms)

- describe what someone was doing when it was interrupted by someone (or something) else. In fact, is more a combination of the past tense and a continuous or repeating aspect. Frequently, this includes a sense of incompletion in the verb, but not always. (Is the equivalent to the Past Progresive Tense in english)

In other words:

It is specially used to describe what used to happen or what was happening.

In this sentence we are talking about two simultaneous facts: (1) the arrival of the ambulance and (2) the dizziness of the husband.

Cuando llegó la ambulancia, el esposo estaba mareado

When the ambulance arrived, the husband was dizzy

Note the husband was dizzy is an action that was taking place at that time in the past when the ambulance arrived.

That is why the verb estar (to be) is written in imperfect tense as estaba (was).

Explanation:

In this activity we have to listen to each statement and identify the verbs in Preterite and Imperfect tense, and put them in the appropriate column.

In Spanish, the Preterite tense is used to describe actions completed at a point in the past, things that have a beginning and an end, things that happened on specific days or dates, at specific times or during specific time periods. Regular verbs in preterite tense have 2 different conjugations. One for -ar verbs, and one for -er -ir verbs. We simply have to remove the infinitive ending and change it for the following:

Subject -ar Verbs -er -ir Verbs

yo -é -í

tú -aste -iste

él, ella, usted -ó -ió

nosotros -amos -imos

vosotros -asteis -isteis

ellos, ellas, ustedes -aron -ieron

*The verbs ser (to be) and ir (to go) have Irregular conjugations

Subject Ser (to be) Ir (to go)

yo fui fui

tú fuiste fuiste

él, ella, usted fue fue

nosotros fuimos fuimos

vosotros fuisteis fuisteis

ellos, ellas, ustedes fueron fueron

The Imperfect tense is used to describe past habitual actions, or to talk about what someone was doing when something else happened.

There are two sets of endings for regular imperfect verbs in Spanish, one for -ar verbs and one for -er and -ir verbs.

Subject -ar Verbs -er and -ir Verbs

yo -aba -ía

tú -abas -ías

él, ella, usted -aba -ía

nosotros -ábamos -íamos

vosotros -abais -íais

ellos, ellas, ustedes -aban -ían

*The verbs ser (to be) and ir (to go) have Irregular conjugations:

Subject Ir (to go) Ser (to be)

yo iba era

tú ibas eras

él, ella, usted iba era

nosotros íbamos éramos

vosotros ibais erais

ellos, ellas, ustedes iban eran

inysia [295]
Most of the time grammar comes after 'common sense" which is inevitable. Grammar rules don't matter anymore when it comes to informal conversation. We only pinpoint grammar errors when we don't understand the statement. So the easiest way to know if the sentence makes sense is to check if in all time subject agrees to its predicate or supporting details.
