the field, Allison Gibbons, a member of the student council, entered the press box, stood before the microphone, and asked for everyone's attention. The crowd grew silent as she began to read the letter. "I was watching the crowd while Allison read it," Andy said. "When she finished, there was silence, and then almost everyone stood up and cheered. All the students stood up. And the football players were all clapping. It was a wonderful feeling to know that we had people behind us." Why does the crowd grow silent after the speech? The crowd is angered because they feel attacked. The statement that best describes how the pacing of events heightens tensions is the third one - The fact pace intensifies the conflict between the narrator and Allison.
Generally, the faster the pace, the tensions are heightened because everything is happening so fast. When you are angry, you don't normally talk slowly and quietly, but speak in a quick manner so as to show your emotions.

What is a common characteristic of Southern Gothic literature? Select all that apply.
Fynjy0 [20]

"Southern gothic literature" is a term used to encompass a particular strain of literature from the American South. It originated in the 19th century, evolving from American Gothic, which in turn, evolved from English Gothic literature. Its characteristics include irrational, horrific and transgressive thoughts, grotesque characters, dark humor. This genre is rooted in the South's tensions and aberrations related to slavery, racism and patriarchy.

Therefore, the characteristics that would apply are:

  • set only in the South, (although there are some examples that are considered within this genre but the setting is not  a recognizable southern one, such as some Poe's poems)
  • romanticized southern life and culture
  • disturbed and twisted characters
