A culture of Spirogyra (an autotrophic alga) is maintained in a water solution containing dissolved carbon dioxide and a source

of phosphates but lacking nitrogen compounds. A researcher determines the rates of synthesis of several organic compounds found in the Spirogyra before and after several weeks in the water solution. Which of the following graphs best illustrates a likely result of the experiment?
a. Carbohydrates: same
b. Proteins: decrease
c. Lipids: same
d. Nucleic Acids: decrease

Answer:

b) Proteins: decrease

Explanation:

Out of all the biomolecules required for the survival of an organism, proteins and nucleic acids are the ones containing Nitrogen. In nucleic acids, the building blocks of DNA, nitrogen is present in the nitrogenous bases, which are Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine, and Uracil. In the proteins, the amino acids contain the amine group or -NH₂ which forms the peptide bond   (-NH-CO-) with a carboxylic group or -COOH of the next amino acid. As the culture of <em>Spirogyra </em>is being maintained, there would be no replication of DNA, which would have required nitrogen to synthesize the new DNA strand. But, to synthesize proteins, the RNA synthesis would require to happen which would also require nitrogen. Moreover, the formation of proteins after the translation of the mRNA would have also required Nitrogen. Thus, protein level in the cells would decrease.

Sloan [31]

Answer:

The enzyme that is responsible for this is the cyclin dependent kinase subunit of mpf

Explanation:

This enzyme is also known as cyclin dependent kinase subunit, CDKs. they are protein kinases and can function as cell cycle regulators. They have the power to modify different protein substrates that are useful for the progression of cell cycle. CDKs are inhibitors hence stathmin is inactivated by phosphorylation. They help to control cell divisions. DNA should not be damaged for cell to move from G₁ to the S phase.

The general function of an enzyme in the body is to ________. The general function of an enzyme in the body is to ________. elim
bixtya [17]

Answer:

catalyze chemical reactions

Explanation:

An enzyme is a proteinous substance that acts as biological catalysts and increases the rate of biochemical reactions in the body. Enzymes are specific in nature which is as a result of the structure/shape of its building block (amino acid).

Enzymes speedens the rate of a chemical reaction in living systems, which would normally not occur or occur at a much slower rate, without the presence of an enzyme. Enzymes acts on the reactants called Substrates by binding to them to form products but they are not used up in the reaction. Hence, enzymes are not reactants.

Anestetic [448]

<span>The correct answer is (a) True, it is of paramount importance to use primary, secondary, and tertiary sources in research. Researching includes using primary sources as they contain original materials on which research is based, but also using second sources as interpretations and evaluations as other researcher’s point of view. That also apply for tertiary sources that  represent distillated and collected information of primary and secondary sources.</span>
