A check-processing center uses exponential smoothing to forecast the number of incoming checks each month. The number of checks

received in June was 40 million, while the forecast was 42 million. A smoothing constant of .2 is used. a) What is the forecast for July? b) If the center received 45 million checks in July, what would be the forecast for August? c) Why might this be an inappropriate forecasting method for this situation?

Answer:

a. 41.6 million

b. 42.28 million

Explanation:

The computations are shown below:

a. For the forecast for July month:

= Number of checks received in June × smoothing constant + (1 - smoothing constant) × forecast in June

= 40 million × 0.2 + (1 - 0.2) × 42 million

= 8 million + 33.6 million

= 41.6 million

b. For the forecast for August month:

= Number of checks received in  July × smoothing constant + (1 - smoothing constant) × forecast in July

= 45 million × 0.2 + (1 - 0.2) × 41.6 million

= 9 million + 33.28 million

= 42.28 million

c. In this, the exponential method is used. But in the given situation we use linear forecasting method

Sloan [31]

Answer:

$532,000

Explanation:

The opportunity cost is the cost of the best option rejected.

In this case the option rejected was the investment project that would have returned a total fo 532,000

Therefore, the model 240 should produce a higher profit than 532,000 to reject his project.

The 310 model would have unused capacity as it has more capacity than model 240 but the company will not need to produce as much. So it is discarted from the calculation as it has inefficiency

Tracy consumes dress shoes (D) and casual Crocs (C). Her marginal utility from consuming casual Crocs is MU Subscript Upper CM
Llana [10]

Answer:

The optimal bundle is 6 pairs of dress shoes and 3 pairs of Crocs.

Explanation:

From the question,

Allowance (M) = $450; Price of dress shoes, Pd = $50; Price of crocs, Pc = $50

Note: MRS-price ratio, MUC- marginal utility from consuming casual Crocs ,MUD- marginal utility from consuming dress shoes

Optimal bundle is determined where MRS = Price ratio

MRS = MUC/MUD = 20DC/10C2 = 2D/C

Price ratio = Pd/Pc = 50/50 = 1

So, 2D/C = 1

       Therefore, C = 2D

Budget constraint:  M = Pd*D + Pc*C

So, 50D + 50*(2D) = 450

      50D + 100D = 150D = 450

So, D = 450/150 = 3

C = 2D = 2*3 = 6

Suppose there are 5 million unemployed workers seeking jobs. After a period of time, 1 million of them become discouraged over t
aev [14]

Answer: Decline.

Explanation:

If a million job seekers out of 5 million job seekers, get discouraged and stop job hunting, the unemployment rate would be recorded to have dropped, because it would mean that there are fewer individuals that are seeking for employment( in this case 4million).
