Select the correct text in the passage. Which sentence best shows that Niels Lyhne has a different view than some of the people

in his hometown? adapted from Niels Lyhne by Jens Peter Jacobsen Jens Peter Jacobsen's "Niels Lyhne" was published in Denmark in 1880. During this time period, social mobility increased, but there was still a large gap between social classes in terms of educational and economic opportunity. For about a year, Niels Lyhne had lived at Lön-borggaard, managing the farm as well as he knew how. He had learned to know the joy found in purely physical labor. He found joy in seeing the pile growing under his hand and in being able to get through with what he was doing so that he really was through. He also knew that the work would stand and not be eaten up by doubt in the night or dispersed by criticism on the morning after. There were no Sisyphus stones in agriculture. What joy it was, too, when he had worked till he was tired, to go to bed and gather strength in sleep and to spend it again, as regularly as day and night followed one upon the other. He was never hindered by the caprices of his brain and did not have to handle himself gingerly like a tuned guitar with loose pegs. He was really happy in a quiet way, and often he would sit, as his father had sat, on a stile or a boundary stone, staring out in a strange, vegetative trance. As yet he had not begun to seek the society of the neighboring families, except Councillor Skinnerup's in Varde, whom he visited quite frequently. The Skinnerups had come to town while his father was still living, and as the Councillor was an old university friend of Lyhne's, the two families had seen much of each other. Skinnerup, a mild, baldheaded man with sharp features and kind eyes, was now a widower, but his house was more than filled by his four daughters, the eldest seventeen, the youngest twelve years old. The Councillor had read much, and Niels enjoyed a chat with him on various subjects. Though Niels had learned to use his hands, that, of course, did not turn him into a country bumpkin all at once. He was rather amused sometimes at the almost absurd care he had to exercise whenever the conversation turned to a comparison between Danish and foreign literature. Caution was absolutely necessary, however, for the mild-mannered Councillor was one of the fierce patriots. He might grudgingly admit tht Denmark was not the greatest of the world powers, but would not tolerate anyone saying anything that might place his country anywhere but in the lead.

Read each quotation from the story, and then decide whether the author is using direct or indirect characterization.
babymother [125]

In those quotations from the story, author is using both direct and indirect characterization. Direct characterization is when author directly states what characters are like and indirect characterization shows personality of a character through speech, looks, actions, thought and effects on others. In the first quotation author is using direct characterization through stating how character looks and states her actions – Della is slender and she has mastered the arts. In second quotation author also uses direct characterization through looks and actions – Madam is large, too white, chilly and she hardly looks at ‘Sofronie. In the third quotation, Madam’s characterization is indirectly shown through her action and speech – she bidded twenty dollars by lifting her hand. An in the fourth quotation indirect characterization is shown through actions – he looked the watch on the sly.

Read the passage from chapter 2 of Animal Farm. Some hams hanging in the kitchen were taken out for burial, and the barrel of be
n200080 [17]

The quotation that is an example of foreshadowing is “The farmhouse should be preserved as a museum. All were agreed that no animal must ever live there”.

Foreshadowing is a literary device that the writer uses to give a hint of what is going to happen later in the story. In this case, the fact that “no animal must ever live there” gives the reader a clue that, at some point, this situation is going to change. Towards the end of the story, the reader learn that Napoleon and the other pigs finish living in the farmhouse that they had prohibited the other animals to live in.

Take a position in the debate over the literary canon and support it. Your answer should be at least one hundred words.
White raven [17]

It is known as a literary canon to the set of classic works that are part of high culture. These works, either because of their formal characteristics, their originality or their quality, have managed to transcend times and borders, becoming universal and always valid.

The criterion for choosing the works of the literary canon should be aesthetic excellence, but this concept is very subjective because what a person can consider attractive another person may find boring. On the other hand, those who limit themselves to consume the books established in the list of the canon lose the opportunity to know an endless number of works that could please them more, and even contribute more to them intellectually and emotionally.

It is true that it is important for students to know classical works of literature such as the odyssey, the divine comedy or more recent works as a hundred years of solitude, however, it is necessary not to marginalize other literary works equally good and profitable for students only because they are not on the list of the literary canon.

The current society has evolved, we no longer have the same thought that we had at the time when the classic works were written. A clear example of this is the role played by women in today's society, the importance of women was a taboo subject and little mentioned in many of the works that are in the list of the literary canon by which many schools are governed, and this can lead to students not exploring and understanding this important topic.

In conclusion, the literary canon is a list of classical works because of their importance at the time they were written and therefore it is important that students know them, because through these works they can understand the behavior and thought that people had in other times. However, it is equally important that students read recent works of current interest that allow them to compare current society with the old one, and the evolution that has occurred in the literature.
