You first want to make the word problem into equations!

Let x represent large dogs
Let y represent small dogs.

10x+5y=215

And now since you are given the value of x / the number of dogs you can solve by subbing this value into the equation.

10(17)+5y=215
170+5y=215
5y=215-170
5y5=45/5
y=9

So as you can see there are 9 small dogs at the shelter!

Explanation #2

In the word problem you can see that it tells you that there is 17 large dogs. It also tells you that in total all the dogs (so large and small) will be $215. It also says the prices of the dogs!

So what you know is : 17 large dogs, $215 total, $5 for a small dog, $10 for a large dog!

In order to figure out how many small dogs are at the shelter you will need to make this information into an equation!

Since it is 10/ large dog this is 10x
Since it is 5/small dog this is 5y

So now you know that 10x+5y=215

Since you are given the # of large dogs, you can put in that number for x

10(17)+5y=215

170+5y=215   Step 1) Multiply 10 x 17
5y=215-170    Step 2) Move everything without a letter to one side
5y/5=45/5       Step 3) Divide by 5 (Both sides!) to get the y all alone
y=9                 Step 4) All done!

There would be 8 small dog keep adding 5 to 170 and the answer would be 8 5s away :)

Solve: the quantity 3x minus 15 divided by 2 = 4x
Anon25 [30]

Answer:

x=-3

Step-by-step explanation:

(3x-15)/2 = 4x

Multiply each side by 2

(3x-15)/2 *2= 4x*2

3x-15 = 8x

Subtract 3x from each side

3x-15-3x = 8x-3x

-15 = 5x

Divide each side by 5

-15/5 = 5x/5

-3 =x

How many nonzero elements are in the matrix below?
yawa3891 [41]

we will find number of non-zero elements on each rows

and then we add them

First row:

we can see that non-zero elements are

2 , 3.1 , 22 , 9

so, number of non-zero elements in first row =4

Second row:

we can see that non-zero elements are

21 , 3.2 , 6

so, number of non-zero elements in first row =3

Third row:

we can see that non-zero elements are

1 , 42 , 8

so, number of non-zero elements in first row =3

Fourth row:

we can see that non-zero elements are

40 ,4 , 6,14

so, number of non-zero elements in first row =4

Fifth row:

we can see that non-zero elements are

10 , 20 , 13 , 5 , 6.3

so, number of non-zero elements in first row =5

now, we can add them

so,

total number of non-zero elements = 4 +3+3+4+5

so,

total number of non-zero elements is 19...........Answer

Many us employess received a 3% raise in 2012 suppose an employee made 47,000 in 2011 and received a 3% raise. What did she make
WITCHER [35]
First lets get 3% into decimal form.

3% is 3/100  = 0.03

Now multiply 0.03 by 47000 to get how much extra money she was going to get.

47000 * 0.03 = 1410

Now we just add
47000 + 1410 = 48410 is what she was going to make in 2012

Another way to do this is

(47000)(1+0.03) = 48410

you would use (1+0.03) which tells you she increased in pay.
