Carbon atoms can form four covalent bonds with any chain or ring called functional groups, other atoms, or other carbon atoms. These atoms or groups can have specific properties on a molecule. This property of carbon makes carbon is central to this incredible diversity of organic molecules.

Organisms are made of different macromolecules that are made up of monomers to create these polymers and carbon helps them to bind to make polymers and also helps in breaking to produces monomers and release energy.
