<span>After Jenkins's untimely death, Lieutenant Carroll leads the surviving soldiers in a prayer for him. He calls Jenkins a ‘fallen angel warrior,’ which is the basis for the title of the novel. Carroll explains that this description refers to the extreme youth of the soldiers - these are boys, not men, fighting the battles. The theme of youth and lost innocence is omnipresent throughout the novel. It is a product of Myers’ own experience in the Vietnam War and the fact that the average age of the soldiers who died in combat was less than 20 years old. Most of the men do not want to process the tragedy of Jenkins and what waits for them in this war.</span>

Solemnly and solemnity both come from the root word solemn, which means “serious” or “joyless.” Why might the author have writte
Leona [35]

The reason why the author might have written the scene with such a serious tone is:

  • The narrator in "Rules of the Game" knows the importance of being obedient and being "a good girl" in Chinese culture.
  • Having a Chinese mother, she knows she should answer the Santa Claus's question seriously, solemnly, and so she does. She solemnly replies that she has been a "very, very good girl."

- The narrator in "Rules of the Game,", a short story by Amy Tan, is Waverly Jong, the daughter of Chinese immigrants.

- There is a scene that, although seemingly simple, is described by the narrator with a serious tone:

<em>"[Santa] then </em><em>solemnly </em><em>asked if I had been a very, very </em><em>good</em><em> </em><em>girl </em><em>this year and did I believe in Jesus Christ and </em><em>obey </em><em>my parents. I knew the only answer to that. I nodded back with equal </em><em>solemnity</em><em>."</em>

- The man who is dressed like Santa is most likely asking such questions to every single child he talks to.

- His solemn tone is probably a part of his role as Santa, to sound as if it matter if the child has behaved or not in order to receive presents.

- However, the question have serious implications for Waverly. She answers solemnly because she takes them seriously.

- Having Chinese parents, she has learned the importance of being obedient and of behaving.

- In conclusion, we can say the narrator uses such a serious tone to show that Waverly, being raised by Chinese parents, understands the importance of being a good, obedient girl.

Read the excerpt from Ovid’s "Pyramus and Thisbe".
Ipatiy [6.2K]

The statement that best describes how the pace of the excerpt creates tension is: Pyramus’s long speech slows the pace to prolong suspense.

The speech, describing Pyramus's thoughts on her death and how guilty he feels about it, even going so far as to wish and call for his own death at the teeth of lions, creates tension by making the suspense of what will happen next last longer.

What effect does Stephen Crane achieve by repeating the phrase "the sacred cheese" in the short story "The Open Boat"?
Karolina [17]

Answer:

  1. A.) The crew's determination to realize their slight chance of reaching land.
  2. C.) compares the men to mice who must struggle to survive but have their efforts go in vain.

Explanation:

"The Open Boat" is normal for Crane's naturalistic style. Naturalism in writing is a point of view that frequently underscores the material, the physical condition as a determinant in human conduct.

In "The Open Boat," one of the best short stories in the language, Crane depends on tone and symbolism to depict the cold blooded detachment of nature. The popular opening line, “None of them knew the color of the sky,” sets up a quick dreariness, a world drained of the emotional value of color. The sea is described as gray and the only green, suggestive of hope, is that of the land that the men cannot reach.

Explanation:

Mr Young argument that he studied his notes and chapters for 18 hours before taking the exam and yet did not get good grade and thought he deserved a higher grade fails the standard of relevance. His argument is not important to the subject matter and lacks the existence to make the subject matter a fact. You can study for as long as you want, but there are other factors that determines good grades that Mr. Young did not consider, such as ability to retain information, intelligence level, and others.
