Our answer: Al3+

Let me tell you why. Since this has 13 protons, we already know that when an atom is positive (ionic), means that it lost electrons. Since they have a 3+, we know that it lost 3 electrons.

Protons = 13
Electrons usually equal the amount of protons, but it lost three in this case, so we subtract 3 from 13.

13 - 3 = 10

Now, we know that it has 10 electrons.

For the following pair, indicate which element has the lower first ionization energy: Match the words in the left column to the
emmainna [20.7K]

Answer:

For 1: The correct answer is Ge.

For 2: The correct answer is Te.

For 3: The correct answer is Ba.

For 4: The correct answer is Ag.

Explanation:

Ionization energy is defined as the energy required to remove an electron from the outermost shell of an isolated gaseous atom. It is represented as E_i

X(g)\rightarrow X^+(g)+1e^-;E_i

Ionization energy increases as we move from left to right in a period. This happens because the atomic radius of an element decreases moving across a period, which increases the effective attraction between the negatively charged electrons and positively-charged nucleus. Hence, the removal of electron from the outermost shell becomes difficult and requires more energy.

Ionization energy decreases on moving from top to bottom in a group. This happens because the number of shells increases as we move down the group. The electrons get added in the new shell. So, the shielding of outermost electrons from the inner ones is more which decreases the attraction between the electrons and the nucleus. Hence, the removal of electron from the outermost shell becomes easy and requires less energy.

For the given options:

 • Option 1:

Chlorine is the 17th element of the periodic table belonging to Period 3 and Group 17.

Germanium is the 32nd element of the periodic table belonging to Period 4 and Group 14.

Hence, germanium will have smaller first ionization energy.

 • Option 2:

Tellurium is the 52nd element of the periodic table belonging to Period 5 and Group 16.

Selenium is the 34th element of the periodic table belonging to Period 4 and Group 16.

Hence, tellurium will have smaller first ionization energy.

 • Option 3:

Barium is the 56th element of the periodic table belonging to Period 6 and Group 2.

Titanium is the 22nd element of the periodic table belonging to Period 4 and Group 4.

Hence, barium will have smaller first ionization energy.

 • Option 4:

Copper is the 29th element of the periodic table belonging to Period 4 and Group 11.

Silver is the 47th element of the periodic table belonging to Period 5 and Group 11.

Hence, silver will have smaller first ionization energy.

What does X represent in the formula for the compound XCl4?
qaws [65]

I believe the answer would be C

The the compound of interest i.e. XCl4, since there are 4 Cl atoms bonded to X. This signifies that the valency of X is 4.

There atomic number of C is 6. It's electronic configuration is giving by 1s2 2s2 2p2. Thus, there are 4 electrons in valence shell of C. This signifies that valency of C is 4. Hence the compound present in present case is CCl4.

Hope this helps :)

A student places four identical cells into four different liquids. Over time which cell will look the smallest WXY or Z
marta [7]

Answer: W

Explanation:

The cell in liquid W will look the smallest out of the four because of Osmosis.

Osmosis is a process by which water molecules move from an area of relatively higher concentration of water to an area with a relatively lower concentration through a selectively permeable membrane(cell membrane).

With W being saltier than the cell, water molecules will move from the cell to liquid W to balance the concentrations inside and outside the cell which will lead to the cell in W being smaller.

If the tip of the syringe, "The Titrator", was not filled with NaOH before the initial volume reading was recorded, would the co
Ostrovityanka [42]

Answer:

The concentration of acetic acid in vinegar of that trial would be greater than the actual concentration.

Explanation:

"The titrator" contains the base solution (NaOH) with which the soution of vinegar (acetic acid) is being titrated.

Under the assumption that the tip of the syringe was not filled before the initial volume reading was recorded, part of the volume of the base that you release will be retained in the tip of the syringe, and, consequently, the actual volume of base added to the acetic acid will be less than what you will calculate by the difference of readings.

So, in your calculations you will use a larger volume of the base than what was actually used, yielding a fake larger number of moles of base than the actual amount added.

So, as at the neutralization point the number of equivalents of the base equals the number of acid equivalents, you will be reporting a greater number of acid equivalents, which in turn will result in a greater concentration than the actual one. This means that the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar of that trial would be greater than the actual concentration.
