In Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the Basic Needs or Physiological Needs include food, water, and shelter. This is the lowest level in this hierarchy.

FURTHER EXPLANATION

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs describes the things that motivate a person and his or her behavior and ranks them by level in a pyramid. The levels include the following (1 being the lowest level and 5 the highest):

1. Basic Needs - air, food, water, sleep, clothing, reproduction

2. Safety Needs - personal and financial security, property, health

3. Love and Belonging - relationships, intimacy, sense of connection, family

4. Esteem Needs - accomplishment, prestige, respect, recognition, strength, freedom

5. Self- Actualization - the desire the be the best version of the self possible

According to Maslow, humans have the natural desire for self-actualization, the highest level in his pyramid. However, in order to achieve this, lower level needs must first be met. The lower levels begin with the basic needs and as one goes up the pyramid the needs become more complex. From basic physiological ones, the needs become psychological and social. Maslow called the highest level as the growth needs - the desire to grow as a person. When these needs are unmet, problems and tensions arise.

Some criticisms about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs are:

 1. It claims that higher-level needs are not activated until the lower level needs are already met.
 2. It claims that once a need is met, getting more of that need is no longer a motivation.
 3. The perspective used to create the hierarchy was very individualistic and the result would vary for more collectivist societies.
 4. It did not consider the culture of other societies and communities.
