Answer: "Mr. Medbourne’s character is greedy. This is evident from the way in which he lived his life. He "had been a prosperous merchant, but had lost his all by a frantic speculation." Colonel Killigrew is gluttonous or lustful. He indulged in sinful pleasures, and his gluttony becomes more apparent after he consumes the elixir and begins to leer at the young widow. Mr. Gascoigne is pompous and loves to listen to himself speak. "Now he rattled forth full-throated sentences about patriotism, national glory, and the people's right; now he muttered some perilous stuff or other, in a sly and doubtful whisper." Widow Wycherly, who is transfixed by her own beauty when she becomes young again, is vain and can’t stop admiring herself in the mirror: "She thrust her face close to the glass, to see whether some long-remembered wrinkle or crow's foot had indeed vanished." Dr. Heidegger is shown as a wise old doctor who has lived a good life and is comfortable in his old age. He does not harbor any desire to repeat his youth."

in 75-100 words, describe the mood evoked by the ending of "marigolds." how does the author evoke that mood?
Aloiza [94]
The story evoked many emotions amongst the lead characters. Lizabeth used to be a careless girl that had matured because of the events happening around her. She had been angry at what she had done to Mrs. Lottie's perfect garden when poverty had hit them. She was confused why her strong father had cried.
Lizabeth realized in the end that life is never perfect and that she has to learn to understand and live it with what she has.

Answer:

The correct option described second is <em>"The tone is the same, but the word choice is less formal, probably for a  younger reading audience."</em>

Explanation:

Replacing <em>"of the Victorian era"</em> with <em>"during a period of time known as the Victorian era" </em>shows less formality and a bit more explanation for younger readers.

Also <em>"distinguished" </em>is replaced with <em>"respected"</em> which is less formal and easier to be understood by younger readers.

The replacement of <em>"Her  poetry influenced ..... and Emily Dickinson"</em> in first version with this long sentence <em>"Her poetry  was very  ............. by Ms. Browning"</em>  in second version reduces formality to make it easier to understand for younger audience.

In at least one hundred words, identify a piece of background information from either the New York Times article "Doris Lessing
Afina-wow [57]

<span>“Through the Tunnel” is a coming-of-age story of Jerry, who wants to do what the other grown-up men can do, and his mother, who does not want to look too ‘possessive nor lacking in devotion’ knowing that her son is going through adolescence. Swimming through the tunnel is Jerry’s way to establish his identity or go through character adjustments. From the New York Times article “Doris Lessing Wins Nobel Prize in Literature”, it can be noted that Doris Lessing is a writer described as <span>“that epicist of the female experience, who with skepticism, fire and visionary power…” by the Swedish academy.
