Gogol is best known for his use of irony, hyperbole, and absurdity to create humor and a sense of existential weariness. In some of his works, like The Nose, Diary of a Madman, and even in his unfinished novel, Dead Souls, he famously takes advantage of a single element, like a nose that has lost its owner, the royal ravings of an office clerk, or the business behind recollecting dead souls, respectively, and extrapolates this element to make it englobe and define his fictional characters, this then puts the characters in very absurd situations that, even though they cause hilarity, leave the reader with a sense of dread and even horror, the irony being that, though existence be dreadful, it is, nonetheless, comical to a point of absurdity.

Explanation:

What is an adverb with the root mer/mar
Mandarinka [93]
These ROOT-WORDS are MAR, MARI, & MER meaning SEA & POOL. It comes from the Latin mare which means SEA. The SEA was of the greatest importance to the Romans. Mare Liberum, the open sea: Mare Clausum, the closed Sea: and Mare Nostrum, our sea which is now called the Mediterranean Sea. All the words on this list have a musical sound, from MERmaid to MARina. “The Ancient Mariner" sounds much more musical than “The Old Sailor" which means the same thing.

A. It creates a melancholy mood that reflects the narrator’s feelings.

The imagery described in this paragraph is very melancholy, which seems to support the narrator's feelings.

He uses phrases like "patches of snow and earth" and "spotty clouds" which give the image of incompleteness, something not quite full.
He also uses images of darkness, "black trees" and "the stars were out" which support the unhappiness of the narrator's mood.
