Read the excerpt from “First Generation” of Dreaming in Cuban. He stops at the ocean’s edge, smiles almost shyly, as if he fears

disturbing her, and stretches out a colossal hand. His blue eyes are like lasers in the night. The beams bounce off his fingernails, five hard blue shields. They scan the beach, illuminating shells and sleeping gulls, then focus on her. The porch turns blue, ultraviolet. Her hands, too, are blue. Celia squints through the light, which dulls her eyesight and blurs the palms on the shore. Which of the following is an example of a hyperbole? “smiles almost shyly, as if he fears disturbing her” “and stretches out a colossal hand” “His blue eyes are like lasers in the night.” “The porch turns blue, ultraviolet.”

"and stretches out a colossal hand" would most likely be your answer. Hyperbole means it is an exaggerated statement not to be taken literally. Colossal mean huge and do his hand is huge but of course not that big.

A hyperbole is a figure of speech that is used to exaggerate something because the author wants to point out something important or give it more emphasis. In this case the sentence that contains an example of a hyperbole is "and stretches out a colossal hand"; the hand is not actually colossal, but the author wants to express that it is bigger than regular hands.

Which statement best states the claim, or main point, that Bacon builds upon in this passage?
Montano1993 [528]

Part A was which statement best states the claim, or main point, that Bacon builds upon in this passage?

A. Holding high office causes people to do evil.

B. Holding high office is one of the noblest aspirations.

C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

D. Holding high office helps people serve others in many ways.

Answer:

C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

Explanation:

The statement that best states the claim that Bacon made in the passage is the third statement because it shows that holding high office comes at a great cost and that highly placed powerful people are really servants, both to the state, fame, or business which takes away a degree of their freedom.

Therefore, the correct answer is C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

I liked reading the narrative more, because I think it gives a clearer picture of what Anne was really thinking while she was in hiding. It was fun to see what hiding was like from Anne's perspective rather than from a director and actors on a stage.
