Both envy and revenge are important themes in the epic Beowulf, which is one of the reasons why this story has endured through time, as revenge and envy are two strong and often destructive characteristics of human beings. In this story, envy is shown through the character of Grendel. Grendel is a monster who cannot take part in society the way humans can. This leaves him with resentment and hate towards the human race, as he is envious of everything he cannot enjoy.

In the case of revenge, one of the most important examples is that of the dragon that takes revenge on people for the theft of its treasure. This is an important example because it leads to Beowulf having to fight and kill the dragon.

Envy and revenge are both central themes to Beowulf, and they're both addressed in numerous ways.Envy: The clearest example of envy can be seen in Grendel's response to Heorot's happy, rowdy, and light-filled celebrations. As a descendent of Cain, Grendel is an outcast of organized society, and he's condemned to wander in a lonesome fashion. As such, the fact that others enjoy community and friendship makes Grendel not only angry, but envious. Thus, we can see Grendel's attacks against Heorot as a display of his envy.Revenge: Revenge is central to the warrior culture described in Beowulf. In particular, revenge was usually taken through what was called a "blood-feud," which involved warriors fighting against those who had killed their kinsman, lord, or king. We can see revenge at work in many ways in the poem. For example, Grendel's mother avenges her son's death by attacking Heorot, while the dragon embarks on a rampage to avenge the theft from his hoard of treasure (and then Beowulf accordingly fights the dragon to take revenge for the destruction). As such, we can see that revenge was an important element in the society described in the poem, and that individuals were honor-bound to retaliate against those who wronged them. Hope this helps.. :)

Which of the following sentences has correct subject-verb agreement?
marshall27 [118]

Answer: d. When he first enters the banquet hall, Macbeth appears cheerful.

Explanation: Subject-verb agreement means that the verb and the subject must agree in number, this means that if the subject is singular the verb needs to be also singular, and the same applies when the subject is plural. We must be careful with the final "s" in the verbs conjugated in the third person of singular (he, she, it). In the given sentences the option "a" is incorrect because the subject is "Lady Macbeth" (she) so the verb should be "walks", in the option "b" the correct it should say "Banquo, not Fleance, is killed" because the subject is singular (Banquo), the option "c" should be, "Fleance, without Banquo, escapes" (because the subject is Fleance), and the correct answer is "d" because it says "he first enters" and "Macbeth appears".
