During the trip, the grandmother showed her true perception of African Americans when she called the child at the shack a pickaninny and said they (blacks) don't have things that white people do. The grandmother lied about the house she knew as a child. She felt that she had to lie in order to get her way. The grandmother told Bailey to make a turn to a house which she remembered was the wrong house but she did not admit she was wrong. She tells the story about how her watermelon is eaten up when it is left on her porch. She also tells the Misfit that he does not have common blood as if her blood was better than common. Because the Misfit is white, he has to be a good person in the grandmother's opinion.
