Answer: The option that best summarizes one central idea of the passage from "Mother Tongue" is The way a person speaks English is not a good measure of intellectual ability.

Explanation: Amy Tan talks about her mother's 'broken English'. She says that when she was growing up she felt ashamed of the way her mother spoke. She is a grown up, now. Her mother understands all kinds of texts but she continues to speak in the same 'limited' way. Tan concludes that the way someone speaks is not a measure of intellectual ability. Ability tests cannot measure her mother's passion, imagery and the nature of her thoughts.

The way a person speaks English is not a good measure of intellectual ability.

Further Explanation:

The first language or the native language to which a person is exposed to from the time of his birth is known as the mother tongue. English is one such language that is spoken the most all over the world and many times English is considered as the measurement for intelligence and the person who reads, writes and speaks English is considered as well educated.

Many people who visit the English speaking nations from non-English speaking countries may suffer the issues due to not able to speak English and are judged on the bases of how fluently they could speak English. It is proven time and again that people consider English as a measurement of intelligence but a person’s intellectual ability should not be measured by the way he speaks English.

I disagree because if you cut off ties from your culture and your past, you're only setting yourself up for failure. You are prone to make the same mistakes again. The past helps shape your future.
