Read this excerpt from "Wiley, His Mama, and the Hairy Man" in The People Could Fly
klasskru [66]

Answer and explanation:

In literature, exposition is the part of a story in which the author sets the stage for what will happen. It is where the theme, characters, conflicts, setting and/or circumstances are laid out. It is during the exposition that we get to know some fundamental facts about the characters that will help us understand who they are and keep up with their development through the story.

In "Now, facts are facts. Wiley was a boy. He and his mama lived by themselves with just Wiley’s dogs," we have an exposition because the character Wiley is being introduced to us. We now know he is a boy who lives with his mother and dogs. Those are simple facts about Wiley that set the stage for bigger conflicts and happenings. We need to know a bit about the characters to feel connected to them.

Read the following excerpt from the "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T. S. Eliot:

Even though option D is also related to Modernism and could be related to the excerpt, option C seems to be the correct one: It conveys the idea of isolation from modern life.

Modernist were called "the lost generation" because of their search for meaning among the fragments of modern life. In the excerpt, the words "lonely men" seem to address the theme of isolation and alienation in society. While everyone seems to have a role to perform in modern life, that does not mean they have found their true identity. Some sort of value seems to have been lost and, with it, men lost themselves. Modernism is characterized by the search of such value.
