The phrases are: "paltry fiendship" and "gossamer fidelity"

They are both describing the "mere Man", in other words, the human being. The word "paltry" means something that has very little value or quality, in this excerpt it describes human friendship, so the relations the human creates are not worthy, there are not strong bonds that keep them going.

The word "gossamer" means something that is very delicate and light, therefore something that can be broken very easily. By saying "gossamer fidelity" Poe refers to the human faithfulness towards someone else, therefore human should not be trusted as very few things are needed to happen to him to be unfaithful.

The other phrases are refered to " a brute" which can be an animal, they are not negative and therefore don't show distrust.

the quote ".<em>..who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man.</em>" holds three phrases that support the narrators distrust of humans.

"frequent occasions", "paltry friendship", "gossamer fidelity"

Viktor [21]

This is missing a few details. I've found the complete question online. It is as follows:

1. _______ is a complete analysis and telling of the life story of a person who is not the author.

A. An autobiography

B. A memoir

C. A biography

2. A memoir is a compilation of ________ about moments or events in the life of the author.

A. fabrications

B. memories

C. facts

3. However, the information provided in both the works is supposed to be ________.

A. fictitious

B. factual

C. complex

Answer:

1. C. A biography is a complete analysis and telling of the life story of a person who is not the author.

2. A memoir is a compilation of B. memories about moments or events in the life of the author.

However, the information provided in both the works is supposed to be B. factual.

Explanation:

A biography tells the real story (the facts) about someone's life in chronological sequence. However, the author of the biography is not the person who the biography is about. For instance, if I write a complete analysis of my mother's life, I will be writing a biography. On the other hand, if she does it, it will be an autobiography.

Unlike biographies, a memoir tells someone's life facts in a more colorful way, approaching the writer's emotions and understanding of events.

Still, both the biography and the memoir have to provide factual information. The author cannot fill in the gaps between the person's life events with something he/she imagines that could have happened. That would be fiction. Biographies and memoirs are supposed to recount facts.

This is because she blatantly states about servants keeping visiting friends secrets. The thought of someone keeping a secret -especially when a question is asked- is seen as untruthful.
