Since one of the main purposes of a text-based discussion is to enrich and enlarge the knowledge or the approach about a specific text or group of texts, the first thing to do is summarize the text; this way, all the participants show that at least have read the text and they have some ideas about it (even if they are very general.)

This understanding is expressed when participants share an idea, claim, or theory as well as it enriches each others' perspectives and shares different points of view.

Asking other participants about what they feel is another important step. By doing this, the participants are able to discuss to see if their theories, claims, or ideas, are strong enough or they can be changed; also, conversation is encouraged by this.
