A human pancreatic cell obtains O2 and necessary molecules such as glucose, as amino acids, and Cholesterol from its environment

, and it releases CO2 as a waste product. In response to hormonal signals, the cell secretes digestive enzymes. It also regulates its ion concentrations by exchange with its environment. Based on what you have just learned about the structure and function of cellular membranes, write a short essay (100–150 words) that describes how such a cell accomplishes these interactions with its environment.

Answer:

Cellular membranes or plasma membranes has many functions. Some of these include regulation of cellular transport, and responding to cellular signals or hormones.

Cellular Transport

The plasma membrane is made up of the phospholipid bilayer with embedded transmembrane proteins. This makes the cell membrane semi-permeable. Movements of substances depend on the composition of the molecules e.g. glucose and amino acids, as needed by the pancreatic cells. These are larger and uncharged molecules and can't pass freely through the membrane so they utilize the transmembrane proteins via attaching to carrier proteins. This is called passive transport. On the other hand, in active transport, ATP is used to transfer molecules, like Hydrogen, from a low to high electrochemical gradient.

Other kinds of cellular transport are:

 • Osmosis and diffusion
 • Endocytosis
 • Exocytosis

Cellular Signalling

The cell membrane is able to signal other neighboring cells by utilizing complex proteins. These proteins may take form as receptors or markers.

Membrane Receptors

They act as receivers of extracellular signals and spark intracellular processes. These receive signals from hormones, growth factors, etc.

Membrane Markers

These allow the cells to identify each other and respond if this cell is needs further development as in organ development, or a foreign body to the system.

The following statements are all true regarding amino acids and proteins. Select which statements are unique to proteins alone a
Vilka [71]

Answer:

The statement true of all proteins, carbohydrates and fats is that human body is able to synthesize them all.

The statement unique to proteins is that proteins are made up of instructions according to DNA.

Explanation:

Carbohydrates, Proteins and fats are macronutrients and required by body in larger amounts. All these macromolecules are made up of building blocks like proteins are from amino acids, carbohydrates from monosaccharides and fats from triglycerides. Human body can also synthesize these macronutrients. Like proteins can be synthesized by central dogma. Glucose can be synthesized by gluconeogenesis from glycogen and fats can be synthesized from acetyl-CoA and NADPH.

The proteins are made up by a process known as central dogma. The first step of central dogma is replication in which a replicated copy of DNA is produced in a cell. The second step is transcription for the production of messenger RNA from DNA. At last mRNA is used for the production of proteins on ribosomes.

Write a short discussion describing trends in the data: compare the control cups (distilled water) versus the experimental cups
Eva8 [605]

Answer:

The leaf discs only float in bicarbonate solution and in the light environment.

Explanation:

The bicarbonate dissolves in water to produce a source of inorganic CO2 in the reaction:

NaHCO3 + H2O → H2CO3 + OH- + Na+

Then, the HCO3- undergoes fixation through several complex steps in order to form a carbohydrate or sugar. These store the converted solar energy in their bonds as chemical energy to be used in metabolism.

Photosynthesis is a chemical process, essential to plant and other primary producers producing energy. Energy in the form of glucose molecules is derived from solar or light energy, water, and inorganic carbon dioxide, while it releases oxygen (from the light reaction). The leaf discs float as O2 gas is produced, making them buoyant.

6CO2 + 6H20 + (energy) → C6H12O6 + 6O2

Carbon dioxide + water + energy= glucose + oxygen

A scientist has an uncharacterized pea plant. She wants to determine the plant’s genotype for seed color. In order to be certain
aleksklad [387]

Answer:

Recessive phenotype plant

Explanation:

If the plant has recessive genotype then it will be easy to identify because it will have the recessive phenotype. However if the plant has dominant phenotype it can either have homozygous genotype or heterozygous genotype. To confirm if the plant is homozygous or heterozygous, a test cross can be done with plant having recessive phenotype.

If our test plant is homozygous dominant, it will pass one dominant allele to the next generation and all the offspring would have dominant phenotype. If our test plant is heterozygous dominant it will pass one dominant allele to half of the offspring and one recessive allele to another half so 50% of next generation will have dominant phenotype and other 50% will have recessive phenotype.

Hence by test cross (cross with recessive phenotype plant) it is possible to determine the genotype of the uncharacterized pea plant.
