On a backpacking trip, Kenny hikes all day at a steady pace, covering 30 kilometers and burning 4000 Calories. At the school tra

ck, Janelle runs the 100-meter sprint in 13.5 seconds, burning 10 Calories. Afterward, Janelle’s leg muscles are aching and she is breathing hard, while Kenny maintains normal breathing all day, even though he burns 400 times more calories than Janelle. Which two statements offer the BEST explanation for this phenomenon?
A. If the aerobic pathway—cellular respiration—cannot meet the energy demand, then the anaerobic pathway—lactic acid fermentation—starts up, resulting in lactic acid buildup and "oxygen debt."
B. Aerobic cellular respiration produces more energy, but its use is limited because of lactic acid buildup in the muscles and the resulting "oxygen debt."
C. After about 90 seconds of intense exercise, the muscles become depleted of oxygen, and anaerobic respiration can no longer function to produce ATP, resulting in "oxygen debt."
D. The rate of energy demand determines how the muscles will obtain energy, either from cellular respiration or from lactic acid fermentation if not enough oxygen is present.

Answer:

A. If the aerobic pathway—cellular respiration—cannot meet the energy demand, then the anaerobic pathway—lactic acid fermentation—starts up, resulting in lactic acid buildup and "oxygen debt."

C. After about 90 seconds of intense exercise, the muscles become depleted of oxygen, and anaerobic respiration can no longer function to produce ATP, resulting in "oxygen debt."

Explanation:

There are two sources of carbohydrates in the human's body for energy (ATP) production. 1) Creatine phosphate and 2) Glycogen. Creatine phosphate metabolizes easily and yields ATP quickly. Whereas glycogen is stored form of carbohydrate which yields energy more slowly. Therefore, initially, our bodies use creatine phosphate and then shift to glycogen. Within 60-90 seconds, the creatinine phosphate in the body is mostly utilized and then energy is produced by the use of glycogen in aerobic pathway. During areobic pathway, oxygen supply is sufficient and per cycle, it produces 32 molecules of ATP. However, when oxygen supply is limited or absent, the body will metabolize glycogen to lactic acid via fermentation and produce only 2 molecules of ATP.

Now consider the example: Kenny hikes all day at a steady pace therefore the supply of oxygen is sufficient for aerobic cellular respiration for ATP production. In this scenario, the oxygen debt is minimal and Kenny relies on aerobic respiration pathway to obtain energy. On the other hand, Janelle runs fast (100 meters in 13.5 seconds) and her cellular respiration would be on the compense of aerobic pathway initially which will be shifted to anaerobic pathway after the supply of oxygen is reduced/minimum. Janelle will heavily rely on the anaerobic pathway because running fast needs energy which cannot be provided via aerobic pathway easily. Therefore, Janelle's body will produce lactic acid and suffer from oxygen debt.

Which of the following claims about the TYR, TRP2, and TRP1 mammalian genes is most likely to be accurate?
Illusion [34]

The TYR, TRP2, and TRP1 genes are located next to each other on a single chromosome and are organized into an operon is most likely to be accurate.

The option a is correct.

Explanation:

The genes for the Tyrosinase, TRP2 and TRP1 are located on the same chromosome and are operons. These are operons because they are controlled by same transcription factors on mRNA.

Tyrosinase enzyme is important for the synthesis of melanin, eye pigments and hair colour. The synthesis of all these is completed in three distinct reactions  catalysed by TRP1, TRP2 and Tyr genes. These work as operon and the protein product is almost 40% similar of the three genes.

The amount of melanin production depends on tyrosinase enzyme activity of all the three genes.

The genetic regulation is done by operons.

A boy threw a small bundle toward his girlfriend on a balcony 10. meters above him. The bundle stopped rising in 1.5 seconds. Ho
Alisiya [41]

Hi!

We know that the boy must have thrown the bundle with some initial velocity 'v', and that the bundle stops after 1.5 seconds at a height 's' with a final velocity 'u' -which would be 0.

Our known values thus are:

Time (t) = 1.5 s

Final velocity (u) = 0 m/s

Gravitational acceleration (g) = -9.8 m/s^(2)

<em>Note: that the acceleration is negative as it is opposing the direction of motion (acting  down on the object, causing deceleration)</em>

We will be using <em>equations of motion for an accelerating object</em> to solve first for initial velocity, in order to find the distance.

<h3>Initial Velocity using     <u>v = u + at</u></h3>

Rearranging the equation, and using the value 'g' as our acceleration, we get,<em> u = v - at</em>

u = 0 - (-9.8)(1.5) = 14.7m/s

<h3>Distance Travelled using   <u>v^2 = u^2 + 2as</u></h3>

Rearranging the equation, we get, <em>s= v^(2) - u^(2) / 2a</em>

s = 0^(2) - 14^(2) / 2(-9.8)

<em>Note: the negative sign is not a part of the initial velocity, but a part of the equation </em>

s = - 216.09 / -19.6 = 11.025 m

The distance traveled by the bundle is hence, ~ 11 meters, which is high enough for the girl to catch.

Hope this helps!
