His condition as a slave improved a little bit when he first got to the home of the Auld's. Mrs Auld has never had a slave before so she was excited to have one and did not really know how slaves were treated by other white people. So she treated Douglass not as a slave but as a human being and even went to the extent of teaching him how to read and write. But all that stopped, when Mr Auld find out that his wife has been teaching Douglass how to read and write.
